Philip Faulks

Philip Faulks is an amazing artist, his early work starting with a lot of paint as he said he

[fell] into the dark spiralling wormhole of painting

with great talent and interests being quite tribal; a lot of things in church yards caught his eye along with the medi evil times. You could see his interest with patterns and rhythm and he started including Australian aspects into his pieces, like gumleaves.

Stranger In a Strange Land

This shows the connection of people and where they came from through metaphores. Philip shows a lot of himself through his artwork which I always find interesting at how people do that.

As what I do is often personal to me;

Just like

Two sons

This painting was made after Philips partner had a son and he had a son of his own. Using the Sun itself to represent the two sons and to me showed the connection of the family with a house.

And

Nameless dread

Which was made for Philip’s youngest son, dealing with a lot of anxiety at the time was very creative with the metaphorical aspects again I loved how you could almost see anxiety in the faces eyes it was wonderful.

When Faulks got into cutting paper he was dealing with a lot at the time and a lot of death he liked it because of the fact that you never knew what the final will look like until it’s finished my favourite was

Drone Descending

With the idea of when a drone descends it crashes (into your life) and destroys/changes a lot. I felt a connection with this as at times it can feel like an unnamed unmanned aircraft is crashing into your life putting it in scrambles.

I loved how Philip Faulks was so open in the lecture and told us the personal truths behind his work it was nice to be shared that work of his and nice to be able to relate.
